PURPOSE

The Codiac Amateur Radio Group ( CARG ) was formed in 1999 for the pending problems of “Y2K”. The purpose of CARG was to assist Emergency Agencies in the Moncton Area with Emergency Communications should the normal communication systems fail or become overloaded.

After the “Y2K” event, it was decided that this structure of Ham Radio Operators should be maintained in the event of Major Disasters or Emergencies in the Moncton area and southeast New Brunswick. The purpose of CARG remains the same:  To assist Emergency Agencies with Emergency Communications should the normal communication systems fail or become overloaded.

An Amateur Radio Communication Centre was set up in the Codiac RCMP Headquarters in Moncton, N.B. and has since been in operation for special events, such as the:

                                                                                                            Moncton Annual Halloween Patrol

                                                                                                            Moncton Annual Santa Claus Parade

CARG is on continual “stand by”  and maintains continual readiness for any Emergency or Disaster that may happen.

CARG DUTIES

To have two members on duty at the Codiac Amateur Radio Communication Centre at all times during a Call-Out for an emergency or a disaster;

and to have two Volunteer Amateur Operators stationed at other Emergency Agency Headquarters if and when the normal communication systems fail or become overloaded (i.e. – Fire Station/Headquarters, City of Moncton Emergency Centre, Red Cross Emergency Headquarters, Hospitals, EMO, etc )

CARG EQUIPMENT

                                    1.                  A complete Amateur VHF (2 meter) radio station with antenna.

                                    2.                  A VHF packet station.

                                    3.                  A second VHF antenna for a back up station.

Wish List – We would like to get an Amateur UHF station and antenna for service on UHF band. We would also like to get an HF Amateur station set up for communicating with RCMP Headquarters ( J Division ) in Fredericton, N.B. and any other Emergency Agency Headquarters as needed during Emergency situations.

VOLUNTEERS

Anyone can be a CARG volunteer.

Membership in a local Ham Radio Club is not a requirement.

A volunteer can be a Certified Ham Radio Operator or someone studying to become a Certified Ham Radio Operator

or anyone interested in Emergency Communications.

If you are willing to assist in Emergency Communications, CARG needs you.

It is strongly recommended that CARG volunteers take the training in Emergency Communications offered by the

New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (EMO).

VOLUNTEERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE 2007

Codiac Amateur Radio Group (CARG) participated in three major activities during 2007.

Canadian Owners and Pilots Association  (COPA) annual meeting in Moncton 4 to 8 July. The CARG assisted the COPA during their annual meeting, by organizing the Amateur Radio Operators who transported the COPA delegates to and from their various hotels and different locations of the COPA events.

The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association

As the recognized voice of general aviation in Canada, the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association. (COPA) raises the awareness of important issues facing the flying community, promotes air safety through education and works to lower the cost of flying. The general assembly meets for it’s annual convention on a yearly basis throughout Canada. This year’s meeting was held in Moncton, New Brunswick. Members of the COPA association were provided transportation from the airport to hotels and restaurants.

Over a five-day period, 25 Ham volunteers put in 453 hrs of volunteer time that included 474 messages from the dispatch centre and 239 trips.

COPA member’s enjoyed the maritime hospitality provided by the Ham operators. Overseeing the operations VE9MCD ensured that all participants enjoyed themselves and that everything ran like clockwork.

Thanks for a job well done to all those who participated in this event. Community support by the amateur radio community is what we are all about.
